It's been a long time since I did a DIY up on the blog that was for my actual house! This one has been a long time coming and I am so glad I finally bought the paint and just DID IT!
A couple of years ago I started doing some research because I noticed EVERYONE in the UK has the same white door! The history of PVC or plastic dooring in the UK is super interesting and it became a construction staple in the '90s and 2000s. The primary reason you see these doors all over is because they are durable, easy to clean, and hard to break into. The downside, they are 'ugly AF' as I would say to Adam!
I LOVE the wooden doors in some of the older homes here in Scotland and growing up in the US, you can basically paint your door whatever color you want. I decided to paint my door a rich black color to go with the rest of the house design and create my autumn paradise with all the extras!
I used a special outdoor paint that can be used on PVC and other materials. After some research, I chose to use Zinsser Allcoat in a nice matte black They do have gloss black and also some other colors if you need them. I picked matte because it looks classier and isn't shiny. I got one liter of paint and it lasted me for both my front and back doors and I still have some left!
The best part of this whole project was that you don't need to sand or do anything to the door. I did clean down the door and surroundings before applying the paint. I then applied two coats of paint, letting it dry in between. These are the materials I used:
- Small paintbrush
- Zinsser Allcoat black matt paint
- Drop cloth
- Any extra autumn decor you want!
Next, I finally got to make the outside ready for autumn! I went and got some mums, heather, and outdoor succulents. I also bought a wooden wreath and glued on some lemons, oranges, and pinecones! I wanted a light wreath so that there was a lot of contrast against the darker door!
Lastly, I did a little doormat DIY! I painted on the lettering and I will use and keep this matt through Thanksgiving!
I'll keep you guys updated about the wear and tear but so far I am LOVING it! I feel like the walk up to the house is amazing and I am super excited to style it for every season. I am still working on cleaning and winterizing the garden but I had to share this amazing DIY with you before it gets too cold to do! Enjoy!
